IPL 2021: Big headache for Rajasthan Royals, Sanju Samson struggles with form in Vijay Hazare 2021

IPL 2021: Big worry for Rajasthan Royals, Sanju Samson struggles with form in Vijay Hazare 2021- Few big innings, and then a no show performance, this has been the story for Sanju Samson in his entire IPL career. The newly appointed Rajasthan Royals skipper is once again finding it tough to find consistency with the bat. As part of the Kerala team for the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, the 26-year-old has score 4,29, 61, and 3. The recent single-digit score came against Karnataka on Friday.

His slump in form will be a big worry for his IPL team management who had let go of the much-experienced Steve Smith and decided to build a team around Samson for the upcoming season. RR COO in a recent interview said the franchise want to build the team around Sanju Samson. He said Sanju was a unanimous decision as skipper. He has the natural leadership qualities required and understands the Royals way. “[Samson] is someone we want to build our team around,” as quoted by The Times of India.

But the way things stand, the decision might backfire for Rajasthan.

IPL 2021: Sanju Samson performance in IPL

Form has been always an issue for Sanju Samson. He managed just 375 runs at an average of 28.84 in IPL 2020. It included single-digit scores of 8, 4, 0 and 5 against KKR, RCB, MI and DC. Even in IPL 2019, Samson scored 342 runs in 12 innings that only included one fifty-plus score.

In 2018, he had fared well, scoring 441 runs in 15 matches with the help of three half-centuries. In his overall career, Samson has amassed 2584 runs in 103 IPL innings at an average of 27.78, making him on the top 25 list of IPL top-scorers since his debut in 2013.

IPL 2021: Can Samson return to form?

The RR skipper need to play well in the remaining Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021 matches to bring back his confidence ahead of the IPL 2021. Kerala is likely to qualify in the quarterfinals of the domestic tournament, so Samson will get plenty of opportunities to improve his stats in the crucial playoff stage. In fact, he showed that can bat for long in the middle with his 61 runs knock against Railways. On the other occasion, Samson was run out for 29 against Uttar Pradesh.

Why Samson needs to step up his game?

If Samson continues to struggle in the batting department, he can cause worries for his IPL franchise. RR had failed to keep a permanent skipper in their team for the last couple of seasons. And they are yet to win the IPL crown since the inaugural season. Thus, the scenario demands consistent performances. His own contributions can help Samson lift the morale of other players in the dressing room during those off-days on the field.
