IPL 2021, BCCI Revenue Loss: With only just 29 out of 60 Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 matches completed, BCCI stares at a big revenue loss if they fail to complete the 14th season. BCCI President Sourav Ganguly indicated that the loss will be over Rs 2000 crore, if the remaining IPL season gets whitewashed. “If we fail to complete the IPL, the loss will be close to INR 2500 crore (USD 340 million approximately). That is going by early estimates,” Ganguly told The Telegraph in an interview.
IPL 2021 suspended: The 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League was suspended indefinitely due to surge in the positive cases of Covid-19 inside the ‘secure’ bio-bubble. Two IPL matches were postponed (KKR vs RCB and SRH vs MI) after two players from the Kolkata camp and Wriddhiman Saha from SRH had returned positive for the virus.

IPL 2021 Phase 2: BCCI is now planning to host the league in September. But with a packed Futures Tour Programme schedule, the Indian board has a task cut out for them. Ganguly said the board is trying to come up with a plan before the T20 World Cup. Discussions have begun but BCCI is not in a hurry to take a final call.
“There has got to be a lot of shuffling. Only a day has passed since we suspended the IPL. We have to speak to other boards and see if a window can be made available before the T20 World Cup. Lots of things are involved and we will slowly start working on them,” he told The Telegraph.
Not only BCCI, broadcaster Star, franchisees and other stakeholders will also suffer big losses in case IPL fails to resume.
IPL 2021 Revenue loss: How much would Star, BCCI and franchisees lose?
The league runs on a unique business model, and should it take a financial hit, it will affect the stakeholders too.
If the IPL is not held this year, force majeure will come into play. According to this, the Star will pay BCCI on a pro-rata basis for the number of matches played. Star pays BCCI INR 54.4 crore per match. Hence the broadcaster will only pay INR 1,577 crore for 29 matches. BCCI will suffer a loss of nearly INR 1,700 crore for the remaining 31 matches.
To add to the revenue loss woes for BCCI, even the title sponsor Vivo will not pay for the nearly INR 225 crore (INR 7.3 core per game).
As for the franchises, BCCI and the IPL teams work on a 50:50 revenue sharing formula. Therefore, BCCI will share 50% of the revenue earned from the central pool with the franchise.
Official partners Tata, Unacademy, Dream11, Cred, Upstox, PayTM and CEAT combined pay INR 300 cr (approx) for a full season. But now they will not pay INR 144 crore to INR 155 crore. Star too will face loses as the sponsors will not pay them the agreed full amount.
