IPL 2021 Phase 2: Kolkata Knight Riders' Shubman Gill all set to be ruled out from IPL; KKR Waiting for update on Eoin Morgan

IPL 2021 Phase 2 – KKR Shubman Gill: Team India and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have been dealt a major blow after Shubman Gill was confirmed to be out for at least three months with an injury. Gill, who had established himself as one of the first-choice openers in the longest format of the game, will miss the entirety of India’s Tour of England, and his participation in the subsequent IPL 2021 Phase 2 is but ruled out.

The former India U-19 star has been a staple for KKR since he was snapped up in the auction and his absence could be a telling blow to the two-time champions as their captain Eoin Morgan is also set to be absent for the remaining matches.

A BCCI source confirmed to PTI that Shubman Gill will be sidelined for at least three months with a stress fracture on the left shin. While a stress fracture takes anywhere between three to six months, with IPL 2021 Phase 2 only two and half months away, he is unlikely to be a part of the KKR squad for the remaining matches as BCCI doesn’t want to rush things and aggravate the injury further.

IPL 2021 Phase 2: “Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the entire Test series in the UK with shin splints that will take a minimum of three months to heal. The team’s administrative manager, at the end of last month, had sent an emailed requisition to former pacer Sharma asking for two more openers to be sent to the UK,” PTI quoted a senior BCCI source privy to developments.

IPL 2021 Phase 2: KKR’s woes are compounded by the further absences of captain Eoin Morgan and Pat Cummins, with the duo unlikely to return for the second phase of IPL 2021 kicking off in UAE on September 19.

However, KKR are yet to be updated on either’s availability status. When InsideSport reached out to the franchise, a source from the KKR camp said the team is yet to receive an update from the BCCI and the Indian team management regarding the extent of Shubman Gill’s injury and his expected recovery period.

When quizzed about Eoin Morgan’s availability for the IPL 2021 Phase 2, the source mentioned that KKR “will have to wait and see” suggesting it is too early to speak on the matter.

While Team India have a plethora of options for the opening spot, the same cannot be said of KKR, who will have a hard time replacing Shubman Gill at the top of the order. Although the 21-year-old has struggled to score quicker, Gill is considered the perfect foil for the team with Nitish Rana and Rahul Tripathi.
