IPL 2020 : Nortje says, ‘I heard about the fastest ever ball in IPL afterwards, I had no idea’

Delhi Capitals pacer Anrich Nortje created Indian Premier League (IPL) history on Wednesday. Nortje set the record for the fastest delivery in the history of IPL as he clocked the speed of 156.22 kmph against Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2020 match in Dubai. He said, he came to know afterwards that I have bowled so fast.

“I heard about it afterwards. I did not know about it at the time,” Anrich told Shikhar Dhawan in a video posted by IPLT20.com. ” I have been working really hard getting my pace right up there. Been working on my braced leg and my front arm.. simple stuff. Need the attitude to get some pace behind it but still need to get it in the right area.”

Interestingly, the South African speed merchant bowled the second and third-fastest delivery in IPL as well after recording a pace of 155.21 and 154.74 respectively.

“It looks like that every game. Really happy for him but not happy for the batter,” Rabada said of Nortje’s record. “When we play we only think about the delivery and not about the speed gun. We learn a lot from each other. He is a real fast bowler and I can learn some technical stuff from him. I have some experience which I can tell him about. It is good to chat.”

Nortje clocked 156.22 kmph against RR opener Jos Buttler in the third over of the Royals’ run-chase, which was scooped for a four by the right-hander. That is the fastest delivery recorded in IPL history since a speed gun was introduced in the tournament.

Despite getting hit for a boundary, the pacer bowled another 155+kph delivery and this time he knocked Buttler’s timber after to draw first blood for Delhi Capitals.

Interestingly, Nortje’s fastest delivery shattered an eight-year-old record of his compatriot Dale Steyn (154.4 kmph). The veteran fast bowler had set the record while playing for Deccan Chargers in 2012.

Fastest Balls in the history of IPL:
Anrich Nortje – 156.2kmph
Anrich Nortje – 154.8kmph
Dale Steyn – 154.4kmph
Anrich Nortje – 154kmph
Kagiso Rabada – 153.9kmph

Notably, it is Nortje’s maiden IPL season and he was roped in by the Delhi franchise as a replacement for England all-rounder Chris Woakes ahead of the start of the season. The 26-year-old has proved to be a brilliant signing for DC so far and he has cemented his spot in the playing XI. Interestingly, Nortje has formed a lethal partnership with his countryman Kagiso Rabada in the Delhi Capitals’ pace attack.

“Yeah, the battle against Buttler was interesting. I know he plays the scoop shots, but when he played the first one, it took me by surprise,” Nortje said. “I did not think he would do it again, but he played the shot once again on the next delivery. He played really well, but I stuck to my strength, obviously we saw how the wicket was playing so I was trying to use the wicket and get some variation.”

Talking about the match, Nortje bagged two wickets while giving away 33 runs in his 4 overs, as Delhi defeated Rajasthan by 13 runs to go on top of the points table.
