IPL 2020: Have top 10 IPL 2020’s highest-salaried players justified their price tag?

Indian Premier League is the richest cricket league in the world. Be it 39-year-old MS Dhoni or a teenager like Yashaswi Jaiswal, everyone who is part IPL become millionaires overnight. But as the saying goes “with power comes responsibilities”, fans expect the same from their favourite players. The big question is “Have they justified the big price tag?”

1) Virat Kohli
IPL 2020 Salary – 17 Crore
Virat Kohli had a slow start to the tournament. However, after a couple of matches, the Royal Challengers Bangalore is back in form. He has scored 256 runs so far, with two fifties. Although he has been an impactful player, he is yet to justify his massive price tag of Rs 17cr. His InsideSport Moneyball Impact Ranking is 8, while the ‘Value for Money’ Ranking is 88.

2) Pat Cummins
IPL 2020 Salary – 15.5 Crore
The Australian pacer emerged as the top buy in IPL 2020 auction as he was sold to Kolkata Knight Riders for whopping Rs 15.5 crore. However, Cummins has failed to live up to the franchise’s expectations. In his first game of the IPL 2020, the 27-year-old went for 49 runs in three overs against Mumbai Indians and was even thrashed for his dreadful performance by fans.

Overall, Cummins has bowled 156 delivers in IPL 2020 so far and he has managed to bag just two wickets. Pat has been poor with the bat as well, as he has scored mere 73 runs in seven games. His InsideSport Moneyball’s value for money ranking is 117.

3) MS Dhoni
IPL 2020 Salary – 15 Crore
Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a good leader, and there is no doubt about it. But it seems the golden days of MS Dhoni-the batsman are long gone. Just 133 runs in eight matches is not something associated with the Chennai Super Kings captain. But the age has started having an effect on his performance too. With just 172 Impact Points, his InsideSport Moneyball’s Impact ranking is 33, while the value for money rank is 103.

4) Rohit Sharma
IPL 2020 Salary – 15 Crore
Rohit Gurunath Sharma has the ability to plummet an innings on a given day. And this season fans have already seen the Hitman Show. Although he has scored just 216 runs, he has been instrumental in giving Mumbai Indians a good start in three matches. Therefore his Impact rank is 16, while Value for money is 9.

5) David Warner
IPL 2020 Salary – 12.5 Crore
Amongst the top 5 salaried, he is the highest-ranked player in Impact ranking as well as Value for Money.

Warner is in great form and is in the race for the IPL 2020 Orange Cap, courtesy of his 284-runs so far. Barring two innings, he has scored over 30 in every match this season. His Impact Rank is 5, while Value for Money rank is 68.

6) Steve Smith
IPL 2020 Salary – 12.5 Crore
Smith had a strong start to the season, hitting two consecutive fifties for Rajasthan Royals. But since then he has been struggling to even enter the double figures, let alone a big innings. Barring just one innings, he has scored in single digits in last five games. With a total of 163-runs, his Value for Money rank is 100, and Impact Rank 34.

7) Sunil Narine
IPL 2020 Salary – 12.5 Crore
Has he been a key player for Kolkata Knight Riders this season? Yes. Has he been able to justify his massive price tag? No. Narine has been a big failure for KKR, both with bat and ball.

He has just amassed 29 runs in four matches, and taken 4 wickets. To add to the problems is his suspected bowling action against Kings XI Punjab due to which he has been benched for now.

His Impact Rank is 66, and is at 124 in Value for Money

8) Ben Stokes
IPL 2020 Salary – 12.5 Crore
Maybe it is just too early, to comment on how he has been this season. Having missed majority of the first half of IPL, Stokes returned in RR’s playing XI against SRH. Although he could not make any impact in his opening game, he scored an impressive 41 off 35 balls against Delhi Capitals.

His Impact ranking is 87, and Value for Money rank is 129.

9) Suresh Raina
IPL 2020 Salary – 11 Crore
He decided to miss IPL this season due to personal reasons. Chennai Super Kings have reportedly decided to end his contract with them.

10) AB De Villiers
IPL 2020 Salary – 11 Crore
Three 50s in seven games, ABD has once again shown why is known as Mr.360. He has been pivotal in leading RCB’s batting department, and hence sits comfortably at 15 spot in Impact ranking. However, due to three bad innings, he has not been able to justify his Rs 11cr price tag. His Value for Money ranking is 71.
