IPL 2020 CSK vs DC: Will MS Dhoni surprise Delhi Capitals with these three new tricks?

It’s been a roller-coster Dream11 IPL 2020 for the Chennai Super Kings. At the halfway stage CSK are placed in the bottom half of the IPL 2020 points table–their worst start to an IPL campaign. However, a win against SRH in the last match has promoted them to the 6th spot raising some hopes for the CSK fans.

But with 5 wins needed out of 6 matches, the MS Dhoni led side faces an uphill task ahead of their fixture against table toppers Delhi Capitals.

Considered one of the most successful chasers in IPL history, CSK’s batting has looked rusty. Barring Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson, the entire batting department everyone has struggled to play an inspiring innings.

Since CSK can barely afford losing a tie allowing incredibly small margins of errors, let’s have a look at three surprises that Dhoni can spring off against DC.

IPL 2020: Promoting Sam Curran at the top can work again

Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni pulled out a surprise in the IPL 2020 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. Instead of Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson, MS Dhoni promoted Sam Curran to open the batting with du Plessis. The move yielded good results.

Describing Curran as the ‘complete cricketer’, Dhoni placed even more responsibility onto his slender shoulders by asking him to open the batting and bowling in Tuesday’s victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad.

It was a move that raised a few eyebrows before the match – it meant Shane Watson was demoted to number three in the batting order – but Curran once again delivered: 31 from 21 balls with the bat and then proved crucual with the ball with figures of 1-18 from his three overs paving the way for a much-needed win for CSK.

IPL 2020: Dhoni can surprise DC with an extra spinner (Tahir replaces Jadhav)

Chennai Super Kings spinner Imran Tahir finished the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League as the highest wicket-taker with 26 wickets from 17 games. But last year’s purple-cap holder is yet to get the nod this season after eight games.

In fact a couple of days before, CSK CEO Kashi Viswanathan said that the conditions on offer in the UAE have forced the team management to go in with two foreign batsmen and fast bowling all-rounders. However, he has hinted that now with the wickets turning, there are strong chances of Imran Tahir makis his way into the CSK Playing XI.

Also the poor string of show from Kedhar Jadav has left CSK fans and management upset and MS Dhoni can very much surprise Delhi Capitals by playing an extra spinner and adding another new arsenal in his attack.

IPL 2020: With Sharjah offering a ‘Sixes Fest’ Dhoni can promote himself

MS Dhoni’s position in the batting order has already fuelled intense debates from diehard fans and cricketing pundits. While he has batted at No. 7 in the first two games, there is strong cricketing logic for him to bat higher up.

In the past, he has been successful batting down the order because he could shift gears seamlessly, take the attack to the opposition, and indulge in one-on-one duels with bowlers. There were instances when he has backed himself to pull off 40 runs from the last two overs of a chase.

Even after all these years, his six-hitting ability has not waned. But the issue with the 39-year-old Dhoni at the moment is that he takes time to get into his groove.

However, with the match happening in Sharjah, the shorter boundaries can help propel Dhoni to a big score if he can stick to the crease. Promoting himself up the order, would also assist his cause in getting a little extra time to get settled before he goes all ‘Vintage Dhoni’ on the opposition bowlers
