IPL 2020 : Check how MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings can still Qualify for Play-offs?

Despite being the most consistent team in the history of Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings find themselves in quagmire now. In IPL 2020 points table they are lingering at the bottom of the table – having registered just three wins in 11 games.

After their latest loss against Mumbai Indians on Friday, the chances of the MS Dhoni-led side to make it to the playoffs look near to impossible. However, still there is a remote possibility of Dhoni’s team to weave some magic and make it to the play-offs.

Check how CSK still can qualify for the knockout round of the tournament:

First TaskChennai Super Kings have played 11 games and won just 3 matches. They have 6 points and a net run rate of -0.733. With three games left to play in the league stage, CSK must treat every match as a must-win encounter and they need to win them by a large margin in order to improve their poor NRR. Also, if Chennai win their remaining games then they will have 12 points to their name, which might prove to be just enough to qualify for the playoffs.

Second Requirement – CSK’s chance of landing into the top four will also depend on the performance of other franchises also. The major requirement behind Chennai’s qualification is that the top three teams – Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, and Royal Challengers Bangalore, remain where they are or, at the most, swap positions among each other.

Meanwhile, it is also important for CSK that Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab lose at least two of their remaining matches.

History in favour of CSK?

IPL history depicts that the final team that qualifies for the playoffs generally finishes with 14 points or fewer – this has happened in all 7 seasons where only 8 teams have participated.

Same was the case in IPL 2019 as well, as the fourth-placed team – SRH had just 12 points in their kitty and they pipped KKR to the final playoff spot owing to a superior net run rate.

Hence, it won’t be wrong to say that CSK still have a chance to make it to the playoffs, but just in case they don’t then this will be the first time that they will fail to acquire knockout berth as they are the only team in the history of the tournament to have qualified for the playoffs in every season that they have played so far.

Moreover, the remaining journey for the three-time IPL winners is arduous as the three IPL 2020 games that CSK are yet to play are against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Kings XI Punjab. Notably, all these teams have shown their quality over the course of the season and RCB are comfortably placed in the top 4 courtesy their superior performance in the tournament.
