Former first-class cricketer Robin Morris was arrested by the Versova police last week for betting on cricket matches. Morris (44) and two others were found betting on Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. Canadian-born Indian cricketer Morris has played for both Mumbai and Odisha.
44 year old Morris had played 42 first class matches for Mumbai. Other than Morris was in the India Under 19 team that took on South Africa Under 19 in 1995-96 series
The police said they received specific information about betting going on at Morris’s house at Yari Road, Versova. The police raided the house and three people including Morris were caught. “Morris was involved in taking bets on an IPL match,” said a senior officer. “Laptops and cellphones were seized from the flat.”
The three have been booked under provisions of IPC and Gambling Act. A magistrate court sent them to police custody till Monday, November 9.
On December 1, 2019, Morris and four others were arrested for kidnapping a loan agent from Kurla and taking him to Versova in a bid to extort Rs 2 lakh from him. The police said that Morris had applied for a personal loan at a private agency and paid a heavy processing fee.
The loan application had been made through the agent, Shyam Talreja. But when the loan application was denied, Morris allegedly started pursuing Talreja for the processing fee.
