Kolkata Knight Riders’ batsman Rahul Tripathi on Wednesday came out to open for the side in the IPL 2020 match against Chennai Super Kings. The 29-year-old replaced regular opener Sunil Narine and impressed everyone with his half-century.

Tripathi smashed 81 off just 51 balls and hit 8 fours and 3 sixes during his innings.

Overall, the batsman has scored 117 runs in just two games at a whopping strike rate of 174.62.

Here’s all you need to know about the star in the making – Rahul Tripathi:

  • Tripathi’s father is Colonel Ajay Tripathi, a veteran who was part of the Indian Army.
  • Tripathi took up the sport seriously post his father’s transfer from Srinagar to Pune.
Tripathi gets his cricketing genes from his father who used to play for UP in his junior days and even represented his university team.
  • Rahul has achieved the feat of scoring six sixes in an over, not once but twice in a local tournament in Pune.
  • Tripathi also holds a B.Sc degree in Mathematics and is extremely good with numbers. His father has also claimed that Tripathi’s lowest score ever was 98 in maths.
  • Though born in Ranchi, Tripathi represented Maharashtra and was based in Pune.
  • He made his first-class debut for Maharashtra against Baroda in 2012 but managed to get just one more game before being dropped. His breakthrough season came in 2014-15 when he scored more than 500 runs to help his team reach the semi-final of Ranji Trophy.
  • In the 2009-10 Cooch-Behar Trophy, Rahul scored the most runs for Maharashtra and was named in the Cricketing XI of the team.
  • Tripathi was bought for a base price of Rs 10 lakh in the 2017 auction. Interestingly,  he would have not featured in the IPL and was only purchased in the last round of auctions.
  • He is the first Pune cricketer to play for a Pune franchise. Between the Rising Pune Supergiant and Pune Warriors India, there hadn’t been a single local player.
  • Tripathi scored 391 runs in 2017 for Pune.
  • Though an explosive opening batsman now, Rahul Tripathi was known to be a batsman who could stay at the crease for long periods.
