UWW World Wrestling Championships: IOC President Bach hails ‘fantastic atmosphere’

International Olympic Council president Thomas Bach is extremely pleased with the “fantastic atmosphere” at the recently-concluded UWW World Wrestling Championship in Budapest, Hungary.

The IOA president had attended the World Championship in Budapest over the weekend as the guest of the UWW president Nenad Lalovic. Bach watched the final round on Friday and Saturday and also spent some time with the athletes.

A guest of World Wrestling President Nenad Lalovic, President Bach praised the great attendance at the World Championships and the “fantastic atmosphere”, noting the “huge transformation of the sport that has taken place under President Lalovic”.

IOC Members Pál Schmitt, Daniel Gyurta and 35-time World Record holder in men’s pole vault Sergey Bubka were present at the world meet with the IOC president.

India was represented in the world champions by a 30-member squad, comprising 10 wrestlers each in the men’s freestyle, Greco Roman and women’s freestyle events.

2018 Asian Games gold medallist Bajrang Punia and Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Pooja Dhanda gave returned with the silver and bronze medals respectively.
