Everything had come to a halt with masses eventually forced to come to terms with “New Normal”. There were multiple situations which also grabbed headlines. 1) Lionel Messi threatens to leave Barcelona
Probably the mother of all controversies. Arguably the world’s best footballer, Lionel Messi was at the centre of all debates, when he expressed his feelings about leaving his childhood club FC Barcelona.
2) Novak Djokovic flouts COVID-19 norms
World No.1 Novak Djokovic had shocked the world when he was found organising a charity tennis tournament which had soon turned into a COVID hotspot. The tennis great later issued an apology on the matter.
3) VAR in football
Ever since its introduction, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has been in limelight for the wrong reasons. Managers and players on multiple occasions questioned the authenticity of it. Many have also called for the ban on the use of technology.
4) Black Lives Matter (BLM) — Australia deny to take knee
It had become a big controversy after the Australia cricket team denied to take a knee as an act of solidarity to Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. Windies great Michael Holding had criticised the Men Down Under on the decision.
5) Racial Abuse in PSG vs Istanbul Basaksehir Champions League match
In the Champions League, Paris St Germain (PSG) and Istanbul Basaksehir, the latter was suspended, after a racial abuse from teh fourth official. Basaksehir assistant coach Pierre Webo claimed to have been referred to as a “Negro”, resulting in a widespread condemnation.
