India vs Australia 1st Test : Australia struggling for openers, 7-8 options under consideration

India vs Australia 1st Test – Who opens batting for Australia ? If opening act is posing few difficulties for visiting Indian team, Australia is in a worse position in the opening department. Such is the uncertainty around who should open Aussie innings in Adelaide – that the Australian team management is exploring not 1 but more than 7-8 options at this stage.

As David Warner is injured along with his potential replacement Will Pucovski – Australia is finding it hard to finalize their opening pair. Marcus Harris, Joe Burns, Marnus Labuschagne, Shaun Marsh, Usman Khawaja, Matthew Wade – the list of options for Australia is getting endless.

Some of the possible options Australia is currently following goes hereunder –
Option 1 – Marcus Harris & Joe Burns – Both Harris and Burns have failed to make any impact during the tour games. Burns especially is struggling big time – he is averaging 11.40 in the Shield and made scores of 4, 0, 0 and 1 in the tour matches. That sort of form makes him almost no-go for the team management
Option 2 – Joe Burns and Marnus Labuschagne
Option 3 – Marnus Labuschagne and Marcus Harris. Problem with both option 2 and 3 is Labuschagne will leave his no 3 slot and Australia will have to reshuffle their complete batting order.
Option 4 – Shaun Marsh with either Marnus or Harris. Marsh is averaging 97 in the Sheffield Shield and is man in form
Option 5 – Usman Khawaja who like Marsh is in good form – Australia may also open with both Usman & Marsh. Both of them are not in Australia’s test plans for a long time now but may comeback in these desperate times.
Option 6 – Matthew Wade is another one whose name is being discussed at this stage with some in favor of left hander to open Australian innings. Shane Warne and Michael Clarke both are in Wade’s favor
According to Clarke and Warne, Wade opening the batting would allow for far greater continuity throughout the order than if it was Labuschagne who was elevated.
If Labuschagne opens, then it becomes likely that Steve Smith moves from No.4 to No.3, Travis Head from No.5 to No.4, and so on.

If Wade faces the new ball instead, No.3-No.5 can stay unchanged, leaving selectors with just the spot at No.6 to fill.

Cameron Green is likely to fill up that number 6 spot for Australia provided he has fully recovered after being hit on head by Jasprit Bumrah during the tour game.

Ind vs Aus 1st Test:Prithvi Shaw out of form, Rohit Sharma unavailable; Can Shubman Gill open for India in Adelaide?

Like Australia, India is also in the same boat, though with less headache. India at least has 1 opener in place i.e Mayank Agarwal. The headache is for the partner of Agarwal. Prithvi Shaw has already lost his last chance to impress the team management. Shaw has failed to get going in the first two practice games and chances of him opening the Indian innings with Mayank Agarwal for the 1st Test against Australia in Adelaide on Thursday is all but over.
So who will open Indian innings in Adelaide ?
Rohit Sharma is also not available for first two tests.
However situation has opened doors for Shuman Gill who has shown he is firmly in contention. The team management might look for a Mayank Agarwal-Gill partnership after the latter’s performance on Saturday. Both of them scored an impressive half-century in the second innings to propel India’s lead past 200 mark.
