India vs Sri Lanka: Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav stare at do or die series for comeback, will 'KulCha' survive?

India tour of Sri Lanka: Kul-Cha or Cha-Cha, who should India pick? – With ICC T20 World Cup around the corner, India Tour of Sri Lanka will hold paramount importance for India’s two spinners — Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal. The Kul-Cha pair has been in off form and Rahul Dravid & captain Shikhar Dhawan will have to decide whether Varun Chakravarthy and Rahul Chahar or even Krishnappa Gowtham given the opportunity ahead of the duo in the limited-overs series, beginning July 13 in Colombo.

Head coach on the tour, Rahul Dravid already said it would be “unrealistic to give an opportunity to all youngsters in Sri Lanka” questions have been mongering over Shikhar Dhawan-led Indian Team to decide the composition of India’s playing squad. With good alternatives available for each role in the 20-man-squad, the choice of spinners- tried and tested Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal or new faces of Varun Chakravarthy & Rahul Chahar is still in doubtful shoes ahead of the limited-overs series (3 ODI’s & 3 T20I’s) against Sri Lanka.

The series holds paramount importance especially for these two spinners, where it is an opportunity for Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal to reclaim their spot in the core Indian Team. A promising show by the if-chosen Varun Chakravarthy and Rahul Chahar could win them the lottery ticket to the ICC T20 World Cup for the Indian side.

Here at InsideSport, we wear our thinking caps backed with a statistical comparison to figure out the potential spin duo for Team India in the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka.

Yuzvendra Chahal

  • ODI Economy: 5.21      ODI Wickets: 92 (54 matches)
  • T20I Economy: 8.4       T20I Wickets: 62 (48 matches)

Though his overall career numbers look promising, his recent form in the 3-match-T20I clash against England at home ground (Eco- 9.91 Wkts-3) and the IPL 2021 (Match- 7 Eco- 8.26 Wkts- 4) doesn’t depict much confidence in his bowling. Chahal’s speciality of getting the breakthroughs has long been missing and might just be outplayed by Rahul Chahar in the spin-spot.

Kuldeep Yadav

  • ODI Economy: 5.22      ODI wickets: 105 (63 matches)
  • T20I Economy: 7.11     T20I Wickets: 39 (20 matches)

Kuldeep’s picture is no different and resonates much like Chahal as the former’s stats can’t be overlooked either. His recent bowling woes- no playing opportunity for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2021 after his poor bowling show in the 2 ODI’s against England on the Indian soil (Eco- 8.00 Wkts-0), has put him in shaky boots ahead of the Lankan tour.

Rahul Chahar

  • T20I Economy: 9.5    T20I Wickets: 3 (3 matches)

A little too early to bank on him in terms of his experience playing for Team India, his bowling form in the IPL 2021 (Mtch- 7 Eco- 7.21 Wkts- 11) has got him in the limelight. His blazing recent form can make him a likely pick in the playing squad.

Varun Chakravarthy

A maiden call-up for Team India earlier during the tour to Australia, he missed the blessed opportunity of failing the fitness Test then. Having yet to don the Indian jersey, he can be a potential pick in the spin option following his recent IPL 2021 gig (Mtch- 7 Eco- 7.82 Wkts- 7).
