India Tour of Sri Lanka – Sehwag blasts Arjuna Ranatunga: Shikhar Dhawan’s team was called ‘2nd String’ side by Sri Lanka’s former captain Arjuna Ranatunga – but Indian team gave him a befitting reply with their performance in the 1st ODI. • Ranatunga called Dhawan & Co ‘Second String’ – They replied by thrashing home team 13 overs early
  • Ranatunga requested people ‘not to watch IND-SL series as it involves a 2nd String squad for India’ – India replied by thrashing Sri Lanka in the 1st match
  • Ranatunga called Dhawan’s team embarassament for Sri Lanka – But Indian youngsters showed, rather Sri Lanka should be embarassed of their own performance.

India Tour of Sri Lanka: Where is Arjuna Ranatunga asks Virender Sehwag? Will his ‘second-string’ jibe still stand?

India Tour of Sri Lanka – Sehwag blasts Arjuna Ranatunga: Former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga blasted the Sri Lanka Cricket board for hosting a “second-string” Team India while Virat Kohli led Test side is in England. He went on to say that hosting Shikhar Dhawan & Co was an embarrassment for SLC. While it did turn out to be an embarrassment for SLC, it was their performance as India cruised to a rather facile 7-wicket with 14 overs still to go.

“Arjuna Ranatunga was a bit rude in saying that. He might have thought this is a ‘B’ team but the strength of Indian cricket is such that you can send any team and it won’t be a ‘B’ team. This is perhaps the benefit of the IPL, we have so much talent that we can’t accumulate in a single team. This team is equally talented,” Virender Sehwag said in an interaction with Cricbuzz.

India Tour of Sri Lanka – Sehwag blasts Arjuna Ranatunga: Shikhar Dhawan & Co silenced the World Cup-winning captain with Kuldeep Yadav saying that they did not pay attention to such comments.

While India looked a little rusty in the bowling department with Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Hardik Pandya leaking runs in the death overs, they otherwise dominated the match. Deepak Chahar, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal are bowling in tandem to restrict Sri Lanka to a little over 4 runs an over until the death overs.

India Tour of Sri Lanka: But it was with the bat that India showed real dominance. Prithvi Shaw hammered 43 off 24 balls to dispatch any ball that came his way. After he fell, Ishan Kishan on his ODI debut in a way trashed Arjuna Ranatunga’s “2nd string” jibe by smashing Dhananjaya De Silva for a six at the long-on. He then continued the hammer and tongs approach, smashing every ball. At the latter stage, Suryakumar Yadav scored quick runs as India crushed Dasun Shanaka & Co.

“We don’t need to answer anybody, we just need to focus on our jobs. We have come here to play cricket. We’re really lucky that we’re getting to play cricket in this situation. Our focus is on our team and on how we can perform well in six matches, because we have a lot of youngsters. We’ll see every match in the same way, that how can we win it for the team. That’s our motto. Other than that, who says what are their thoughts. We should focus on ourselves and enjoy our cricket,” Kuldeep Yadav said at the post-match press conference.

India Tour of Sri Lanka – Sehwag blasts Arjuna Ranatunga: India’s batting performance was especially stunning considering it was the debut ODI of Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav and only the 4th ODI of Prithvi Shaw. Yet, the three together took Sri Lankan bowlers to cleaners. If Prithvi Shaw scored at a destructive strike rate of 179.17, Ishan Kishan smashed 59 off just 42 with a strike rate of 140.48. Suryakumar Yadav slammed 31 off 20 balls at a strike rate of 155.00. Had it not been for an hour of sluggishness in the middle overs from Shikhar Dhawan and Manish Pandey, the match would have been over even earlier as the score after the 1st powerplay (10 overs) read 91/1.

That the combined international experience of the trio is just 16 matches, makes it an amazing achievement. Shikhar Dhawan said that Prithvi Shaw and Ishan Kishan wrapped up the match within the first 15 overs and the rest was only customary.

“Did you take it to heart? Arjuna Ranatunga had said that a second-string team had been sent and that it was an insult to them. The young Indian team showed how to silence the hosts. The atmosphere has changed a little. The whole way of demolishing, absolutely annihilating the opposition, destructive,” Aakash Chopra said in his YouTube channel.

“Not really, we don’t talk about that. Everyone is completely focused. The way the practice sessions are going, the way the game went yesterday, it’s going according to plan and we are really excited for the challenge. We are not thinking about that. We are just here to have some fun, enjoy this series and take a lot of positives from here,” Suryakumar Yadav said ahead of the 1st ODI.
