India Tour of Sri Lanka – Laxman to Dhawan: In a different country, Shikhar Dhawan would be the 1st pick in any T20 team. But with a gigantic talent pool and at least 4-5 players fighting for every position, Virat Kohli’s Team India is finding it hard to accommodate Dhawan in the ICC T20 World Cup’s playing XI. KL Rahul is preferred as Rohit Sharma’s partner. Hence, India’s tour of Sri Lanka will be crucial for the veteran batsman. Former India batsman VVS Laxman has sent a clear message for Dhawan, the captain for the Lankan tour, ‘score runs to be considered for the T20 World Cup’.

“Shikhar will be very clear that he has to use this opportunity, especially keeping in mind the T20 World Cup. There is so much stiff competition with Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul as established openers. Virat Kohli very clearly mentioned that he wants to open in the T20 format. So, Shikhar has to be amongst the runs,” VVS Laxman said on Star Sports.

India Tour of Sri Lanka: Before 2020, Shikhar Dhawan was considered unmovable from his spot due to his consistency in the limited-overs format. He scored 1673 runs in 63 innings at an average of 27.88 in T20Is. But the emergence of KL Rahul has put him in a spot of bother. Since January 2020, KL Rahul has scored 961 runs in 29 innings at an average of 33.13. Only Rohit Sharma has a better average playing a lesser number of games.

ICC T20 World Cup: Who will be Rohit Sharma’s opening partner in T20 WC?

Since 2020 Mat Inns NO Runs HS Ave SR 100 50
Shikhar Dhawan 7 6 0 169 52 28.16 120.71 0 2
KL Rahul 15 14 1 419 57* 32.23 131.76 0 4
Rohit Sharma 7 7 1 231 65 38.5 148.07 0 3

That has forced captain Virat Kohli and Team India management to make a choice, making KL Rahul the preferred partner of Rohit Sharma in T20s, ahead of Shikhar Dhawan. Kohli publicly acknowledged that as well ahead of the England series.

“It’s quite simple, KL and Rohit have been performing at the top of the order for us and those two would start. And if Rohit takes rest or KL has a niggle or something Shikhar obviously comes back as a third opener. The starting composition, Rohit and Rahul will start,” Kohli declared.

India Tour of Sri Lanka: However, Dhawan has impressed in the IPL. After scoring 618 runs for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2020, he is currently IPL 2021’s top-scorer with 380 runs at an average of 54.28 and a strike rate of 134.27. With KL Rahul’s struggles in the T20Is against England, if Dhawan can manage to score a ton of runs in the 3-match T20 series against Sri Lanka, Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri will have to take notice and could give him a start in the ICC T20 World Cup.

“While he is excited at being the captain of the Indian team, anyone will be proud leading their country, but the focus will be on to score runs and put his spot in a safe and secure position,” VVS Laxman said.

“I feel the team might not be looking at him Shikhar Dhawan. It is just my thought because last when you played him in the T20Is, he played just one match and was dropped for four. That wasn’t fair, to begin with,” Chopra opined on his YouTube channel.

“However, his IPL has been so good that you again want to go towards him but can’t keep doing this, that you do one thing first and then the other thing. But they have made him the captain now, so if he does well, his name will be there in the list,” Chopra added.
