India Playing XI 3rd ODI – IND vs ENG: India’s six-wicket defeat to England in the 2nd ODI came as a rude shock as the bowlers failed to defend 336 runs total. Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes thrashed Indian bowlers, especially spinners on a dreadful night in Pune on Friday. But with the 3rd ODI becoming a series decider, India captain Virat Kohli will need to make changes to Playing XI with Kuldeep Yadav expected to make way for Yuzvendra Chahal. However, the interesting point will be the inclusion of Hardik Pandya. The all-rounder is playing a batsman’s role in the ODI and India missing a fifth bowler option. It could force the team management to include Mohammed Siraj for the final match.

India Playing XI 3rd ODI – IND vs ENG: Should Kohli replace Yadav with Yuzvendra Chahal?

Kuldeep Yadav’s disappointing show on Friday made heads turn. In the two ODIs, Yadav has been hit for 152 runs in 19 overs. His economy in the 2nd ODI was 8.40 without any yields. Stokes and Bairstow commanded the wrist-spinner, smashing him for eight sixes, most by an Indian bowler in the ODIs.

The disappointing show isn’t a one-off though. In the first match, Yadav conceded 68 runs in 9 over. Before that in the only ODI that he played against Australia, he gave away 57 runs in 10 overs with just one wicket. In the New Zealand ODI series, he was costly again, giving away 84 runs in his 10 overs for two wickets. Hence, it could be time for him to take a break and come back fresh as India will need him a lot in the upcoming series.

India Playing XI 3rd ODI: Kuldeep Yadav set to be dropped for Chahal?

In his place, Yuzvendra Chahal is the other spinner who could come in. But of late, Chahal’s performances do not boost confidence. He has had a disappointing run since 2020 and is still low on confidence following the T20I series against England. But ODIs could be his redemption. A good match could set him on the right track.

It should also be noted that India’s plan to go with Krunal Pandya as an ODI bowler did not work completely in the 2nd ODI. He was the most expensive bowler, conceding 72 runs in six overs. The other spin option India have is Washington Sundar, who the team management mainly considers as a batting all-rounder who can bowl a bit. That raises a question about team selection. Axar Patel or Ravichandran Ashwin — both being able batsmen could have come in handy in such a situation, especially when Krunal was making his ODI debut.

India Playing XI 3rd ODI: Will Hardik Pandya make way for Mohd Siraj or T. Natrajan?

The chances of dropping Hardik Pandya in favour of a fourth seamer look bleak. But with Hardik playing as a batsman, with the series at stake, Kohli could consider adding Mohammed Siraj to the playing XI. That would essentially mean, dropping Hardik and depleting India’s batting.

However, to strengthen India’s seam options, considering only pacers have done well in the series, Siraj could be India’s best bet. The Hyderabad pacer has been in a new avatar since the Australia tour. He was effective with the limited opportunities in the Test series as well. Now, it could be time to recall him to the Playing XI in the ODIs too.
