Initially, it was a four-event tournament, but it became a five-event tournament in the next edition with mixed doubles added up. Asian countries have dominated this sport at the Olympics, with China being the most dominant country with 41 medals, including 18 gold.

India fared well in this sport at the Olympics, winning two medals in this sport out of the total twenty-eight medals that India won at the Olympics. First, Saina Nehwal in the women’s singles at the 2008 Bejing Olympics, and eight years later, it was P.V Sindhu winning silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Sai Praneeth

Sai Praneeth will be making his Olympic debut at the Tokyo Olympics. The 13th seed will represent India in men’s singles, and he can pull off surprises. The 28-years-old shuttler rose to fame when he became the first Indian shuttler to win a bronze medal in the BWF World Championships in 2019. He has been awarded a tricky draw in the group stages, but he is still considered the dark horse in this tournament.

P.V Sindhu

P.V Sindhu is one of the biggest medal contenders for India. The 6th seed will represent India in women’s singles, and she is expected to put up a good show in the tournament.  P.V Sindhu rose to fame when she won a silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics, making her the first Indian woman to win an individual silver. With no Carolin Marin, gold medallist at the 2016 Rio Olympics, P.V Sindhu is considered the defending champion this time at the Olympics. She’s has been awarded an easy draw in group stages but will have to face Tai Tzu-Ying in the semi-final potentially.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy & Chirag Shetty

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy & Chirag Shetty will be the third-ever Indian pair representing the nation in badminton men’s doubles at the Olympics. The duo rose to fame when they won a silver medal in the 2018 Gold coast games and backed it up with a silver medal finish in the French Open. At the Tokyo Olympics, they are put in a tough group alongside World number 1 (Marcus Fernaldi Gideon & Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo) and World number 3 (Lee Yang & Wang Chi-Lin).

2008 Beijing Olympics

She won a bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and became the first Indian badminton player to win an Olympic medal. She had a comfortable victory in the bronze medal match after her opponent Wang Xin retired hurt when the game was in the second set.

2016 Rio Olympics

PV Sindhu cruised to the finals of the women’s singles and set up a cracking clash against Carolina Marin from Spain. Eventually, PV Sindhu had to settle for silver after losing the finals, but she became the first Indian woman silver medallist at Olympics.
