What is the MANDATORY sharing Act?
The Sports Mandatory Sharing Act was introduced in 2007. The act’s goal is to “provide access to the largest number of listeners and viewers, on a free-to-air basis, of sporting events of national importance”.
Prashar Bharati, India’s largest public broadcasting network, has been connected to this Act. After the Prasar Bharati Act was passed, this was extended to include All India Radio and the Indian channel Doordarshan. In essence, the government wanted to provide viewers and listeners more free access to sports coverage. This was accomplished by providing individuals who couldn’t buy channels like Sony or Starsports with access to the already-free Doordarshan channel in a high-quality manner.
