Ishan Kishan was among the most notable absentees as India named their squad for the Asia Cup 2022 earlier this week. with the tournament being a practice ground for the T20 World Cup later this year, the non-selection almost ends Kishan’s hopes of making the squad for the second successive ICC tournament.
The 23-year-old did not take his sacking well, posting a cryptic message on social media. On his Instagram story, the IPL’s costliest player shared the lyrics of the song ‘Humble Poet’ by Bella. It accompanied a picture of him practicing with his focus set on making a return to the main team.
He shared a part of the song which clearly signalled his intentions, with a comeback on his mind. The lyrics said: ‘Ab aisa banna nahi, bhale ghayal ho jana. Tujhe phool samjhe koi, tu fire ho jana”, which translates to “Don’t become something else even if it pains you. If someone considers you a flower, become a fire.”

Having played all seven T20Is against South Africa and Ireland, Kishan was relegated to the bench in the games against England and West Indies. India first opted to open with Rishabh Pant and then Suryakumar Yadav as IPL 2022’s most expensive signing warmed the bench. He did get his chance in the final game of the series in what was an inconsequential fixture.
Kishan is India’s second highest scorer in T20Is this year. He is also the second highest ranked batsman from India, only behind Suryakumar Yadav in the ICC T20I Rankings. He is now part of India’s squad for the 3 ODIs against Zimbabwe and will be aiming to set things right and earn a return to the side.
