IND vs ZIM 1st ODI: Deepak Chahar has set major goals ahead of the India vs Zimbabwe 1st ODI in Harare on Thursday. The pacer is marking his return to international cricket, but has already set massive targets with major competitions coming up, including the T20 World Cup in Australia in October. Chahar is targeting the all-rounders role as the player believes he can make contribution in both the batting and bowling department. Follow India tour of Zimbabwe live updates with InsideSport.IN

It is important to note that Chahar has been out of action since February. This is his international game after a long recovery period, which he called as ‘long vacation’. But the player means business straight away and wants to make good contribution in the ongoing series.

However, he is aware of the competition that exists in the Indian team for all positions. The only way to impress is by performing in games and attracting selectors attention.

“It was a long vacation for me. Now fully fit and back. Tough competition in the Indian team and it has been high since I started playing. If I get an opportunity, I can do the job with the new ball and bat in the lower order. It is about performing and I don’t think about opportunities,” Chahar said ahead of the first ODI on Thursday.

“I have been working on my batting for many years but I get very less opportunities. Last year I batted in just four matches and I did well, so hoping to do well if I get a chance.”

With the selectors having requested VVS Laxman and co to keep a tab on Chahar’s fitness, it just shows that the player is in contention for the World Cup slot. Before the injury setback, Chahar was a regular member of the T20 squad. But few months down the line, he is not in the big picture with the likes of Arshdeep Singh  and others having grabbed their chance too.

However, with Chahar known for his ability to score runs down the order, it can work in his favour. But as of now, it is also about proving his fitness and show that he is still in good form to make it to the core squad for Australia. In ODI cricket has scored two half-centuries in seven matches, which proves that the batter can stand up to be counted when required.
