Such kind of a losing streak is not very new to West Indies cricket. In the year 2005, West Indies had lost 11 straight matches in a streak, which is their most ever currently in the 50-over format. But another loss against India will take Windies to 9 straight losses. As West Indies will face New Zealand next, they may end up surpassing their previous mark of 11 losses.

As a result the current West Indies team is staring at an embarrassing episode of eclipsing that record if they lose their next four matches. Before the India vs West Indies started, they had six losses and with India coming to the Caribbean with a second-string side, they had a good chance to break that streak

To be fair, things have not gone according to plan in the series for the home team. They have lost both the matches, but it was close wins for India, which could have been achieved by West Indies itself. While West Indies had the chance to seal a consolation win, the visitors just run though them, sealing a humungous 118-run win.

It would not be wrong to say that West Indies have been extremely poor in the ODI format in 2022. They have played 17 matches, won just four. Embarrassingly enough, their last win came against minnows Netherlands in May-June.

After that show, they have lost eight straight matches, three each against Pakistan and Bangladesh and two against India.

IND vs WI 3RD ODI: What has pegged West Indies back?

  • Despite having some of the best T20 players in the world, Windies haven’t done well in the ODI format.
  • Players who have starred in T20 format haven’t been able to pace their innings in ODIs.
  • The constant changing of captain, coaches and players too hasn’t helped.
  • Kieron Pollard suddenly called his time in international cricket, leaving the captaincy to a young Nicholas Pooran.
  • But the challenge lies elsewhere. Shimron Hetmyer, a fine player has been ignored on fitness ground even though he has done well in IPL 2022.
  • Other such as Sunil Narine, Andre Russell are a constant miss in the ODI side.
  • Shai Hope has been the only star in the ODI format for West Indies.
  • The home pitches too have not helped the team. The slow and sluggish pitches aren’t suitable for big hitters like West Indies batters.
  • It was evident in the Bangladesh series as West Indies failed to play 50 overs in all three matches.
  • Against India, West Indies have come close twice but the experience if playing big teams has helped the Indian players ace both matches.

If one compares this record to the one which was set by the West Indies in 2005, one can at least say that their 11 losses came against stronger opponents. They lost four matches against Pakistan, five against South Africa and one each against Sri Lanka and India.

At present, Bangladesh holds the record for the most successive defeat at 23 (1999-2002) and 22 (1986-98) matches in ODIs. Zimbabwe comes next with 18 straight losses in 1983-92). Interestingly, England with 11 losses (2000-01) are also in the frame.

With the way West Indies are playing their cricket, it would take something big to even conjure a win in the near future. But as far as their wait goes, it might be stretched with a strong New Zealand also visiting West Indies, will play three ODIs as well.
