Shubman Gill laid waste to a golden opportunity on Tuesday after a disappointing start to his T20I career. Given his maiden cap in the shortest format of the game, the 23-year-old managed just 7 runs before being dismissed. He started off with a glorious boundary but fell prey to the spin of Maheesh Theekshana.
Gill had a fine run in 2022 making a claim for his place in the ODI squad. He even made a comeback in Tests with a fine hundred in Bangladesh. In T20s, he was one of the main reasons behind Gujarat’s run for the IPL 2022 title. Much was expected of him on his debut, but he failed to materialise the opportunity on a flat Wankhede track.
While the 23-year-old is not expected to lose his place, there will be pressure on him to do well. The likes of Rahul Tripathi and Ruturaj Gaikwad are waiting for an opportunity. Seniors Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul also remain in the hunt. However, Gill is likely to be backed throughout the series and he will hope to repay the faith in the games to come.
