India Playing XI 1st ODI: Spoilt for choices, Shikhar Dhawan & Rahul Dravid hit selection dilemma ahead of 1st ODI vs Sri Lanka

The first dilemma that Rahul Dravid must get ahead of is the wicketkeeping spot. While both Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan have proven wicketkeeping records, it’s the batting that will matter. Kishan has already proved that in Indian colours but Samson hasn’t quite lived up to the expectation. Thus, InsideSport takes a look at India’s Probable Playing XI against Sri Lanka in the opening match of the series that will be played on July 18 now.

Opening spot – Who should open with Shikhar Dhawan: The most conflicting one is the opening spot. While Shikhar Dhawan’s place is guaranteed, it is about picking the right opening partner. There are four openers in the squad — Prithvi Shaw, Devdutt Padikkal, Nitish Rana, Ruturaj Gaikwad. Only Prithvi Shaw has the international experience. Furthermore, he is coming back off a fantastic scoring record.

As InsideSport understands, Prithvi Shaw will be the 1st choice for the 1st ODI while Padikkal too will get his chance but the rest will have to wait.

No 3: Suryakumar Yadav: After a stunning debut against England, Suryakumar Yadav is all set to make his overseas debut against Sri Lanka. There’s little doubt what Suryakumar Yadav could do. By smashing Jofra Archer for a six off the very first ball of his international career, he has proved that. On his first overseas tour with India, he will play an important role as he is considered to fill the gaping No 4 hole in India’s limited-overs squad.

India Tour of Sri Lanka: No 4: Manish Pandey: Manish Pandey will get another go with the WC spot at stake. The stylish Karnataka batsman has been in good touch, shining in both intra-squad practice games and with the ICC T20 World Cup on the horizon, Rahul Dravid and the team management would like to get another look at his batting prowess.

No 5: Sanju Samson (WK): The Kerala batsman is yet to shine for India with the potential he has. But the Sri Lanka tour might just be his platform to prove his worth. With Rahul Dravid at the helm, he will get the confidence he needs to reboot his international career.

India Tour of Sri Lanka: No 6: Hardik Pandya: The flamboyant all-rounder has already been dubbed as the white-ball specialist after losing his place in the Test side. But with an injury crisis and a persistent back problem has hindered his growth as a player. However, the Sri Lanka series will be a crucial one as the team management wants to see his bowling. There will be no place for batsman Hardik Pandya — something that selectors have already made clear. After not bowling a single ball in the IPL 2021, it will be his chance to redeem his bowling avatar in the series.

No 7: Krunal Pandya: While India could afford to play a specialist spinner, instead, Krunal Pandya is set to play at No 7, purely based on his batting skills. While he may not bowl complete 10 overs but India’s current squad lacks depth at the tail end and Krunal Pandya would be a perfect candidate, although critics have already trashed the move to play him in the ODIs as he is not a 10-over bowler.

India Tour of Sri Lanka: No 8: Kuldeep Yadav: Like Manish Pandey, the Sri Lanka series will be Kuldeep Yadav’s chance to get his form back and vie for a spot in the ICC T20 World Cup squad. With spin-friendly tracks, he will need to do better as he has been competing against Rahul Chahar and Krishnappa Gowtham for the place. Any slip-up, he might be overlooked completely.

No 9: Bhuvneshwar Kumar: The vice-captain of the team, Bhuvneshwar Kumar will lead India’s bowling attack. Furthermore, his batting skills, albeit limited, would be helpful in the tail end if it reaches to that.

India Tour of Sri Lanka: No 10: Navdeep Saini: Navdeep Saini will get his chance with T Natarajan missing due to injury. Having impressed in Australia, he hasn’t quite established himself in the India squad but with the aim to secure a place in India’s T20 World Cup squad, he will give it everything.

No 11 Yuzvendra Chahal: Like Kuldeep, he is expected to return to the fold having been dropped from India’s playing XI from England series. He has endured a poor run of form in the last one year and even for him, it will be a chance to get his form back with the T20 World Cup spot at stake. With that, the famed Kul-Cha pair is set to return.
