India suffered a humiliating whitewash in yet another series defeat in South Africa. KL Rahul became the first Indian captain to lose his first three games as captain.

India have now lost their last three ODI series in SENA countries, and with the 50-over World Cup in 18 months, the warning signs are evident for coach Rahul Dravid. It is only India’s fifth whitewash in ODIs in a 3 or more game series.

While the loss in the Test series was difficult to process, the failure in the subsequent ODI series, especially a whitewash will a tough result to comprehend. Barring the late heroics of Deepak Chahar in Cape Town, India were no where close to matching an in-transition South African side in all three games.

India had blanked South Africa in their last visit to the Rainbow nation in 2018 under Virat Kohli’s leadership. In 2022, Kohli’s presence was reduced to a mere batsman after he was unceremoniously sacked from white-ball captaincy following the T20 World Cup last year.

India last suffered a whitewash in 2020 under Kohli’s leadership, when New Zealand thoroughly outplayed a visiting Indian team at home. Incidentally, Rohit Sharma had also missed that tour due to injury.

Nonetheless, head coach Rahul Dravid will have to ponder over some huge calls especially with the World Cup on the horizon. The team are in transition and vice-captain KL Rahul has lost all four games he has captained on South African soil.
