On InsideCricket show, Wasim Jaffer named his picks for the 1st ODI with the notable omission being Ruturaj Gaikwad and Venkatesh Iyer. The idea behind Jaffer’s selection is to have a strong batting including middle-order.
Wasim Jaffer said he would prefer KL Rahul to open with Shikhar Dhawan and have four genuine pacers in the mix apart from a single spinner in R Ashwin. To further strengthen batting he picked Shardul Thakur in place of Yuzvednra Chahal.

“Definitely, I feel KL Rahul should open in Rohit’s absence. He obviously played as an opener throughout his career. The newcomers will get their chance but I feel India will start with their strongest squad. The top 3 will have to score the bulk of runs and I feel Ruturaj is still very young. Both Venkatesh and Ruturaj will have to wait for their chances,” Wasim Jaffer said.
Keeping 4 pacers in the lineup is an aggressive approach where the objective would be to let Proteas score all few runs as possible. A strong middle order with the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav, and Ravichandran Ashwin showcases that the middle order would easily take control of the batting prowess if a top-order failure happens.

As for the new skipper KL Rahul, who is filling in for injured Rohit Sharma, it will be a big challenge. He doesn’t have a great IPL stat to boast about and India lost the Test he captained in.
“There will be pressure on Rahul. But everyone will be familiar since he led the team in the 2nd Test. So, I don’t think he will face any difficulty. He has also led in IPL for the last two years,” Wasim Jaffer said.
