IND vs SA Live: Shikhar Dhawan slams another half-century to make most of Ruturaj Gaikwad snub, extends lifeline in Team India

Veteran Team India opener Shikhar Dhawan proved his mettle on Sunday with a  fine half-century in the third and final ODI against South Africa. The elegant left-hander looked in sublime touch and registered yet another good score to remain in contention for a spot in the 50-over set up.

Dhawan has already lost his place in the T20I team but continues to reign supreme in ODIs and repay the faith of coach Rahul Dravid. The 36-year-old was picked ahead of promising Ruturaj Gaikwad in the 3rd ODI to much criticism, but Dhawan delivered all right, with his second half-century of the series.

Dhawan had captained the Indian team in Sri Lanka, but his future was uncertain especially with Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan all emerging as opening options for Team India. Rahul, who batted in the middle order in recent times, returned to the top in Rohit’s absence, but it remains to be seen what happens when the Indian skipper returns.

As for Dhawan, the left-hander has done enough to hold onto his place in the side, and should continue to remain a first choice opener alongside Rohit Sharma, with who he enjoys a brilliant partnership.
