When he tried to get past the security barricade to get a selfie with Kohli at the Guwahati airport, it didn’t work out. Hence, he booked himself a room at the Team India hotel for Rs 23,400. In his first attempt, Rahul tried his luck at the Lokopirya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport when the Indian team landed on September 29. Battling sickness, Rahul tried to get past the security cordon but failed to go near him.

“I was there at the airport, I could see him coming out and approach the shuttle bus. The security did not allow me to go near or to meet him once. I knew, Kholi would be in the city for the next four days and fancied my chances to meet him at the ACA Barsapara Stadium in practice sessions. Here too the security cover was elaborate and eluded me a chance to meet my hero and click a selfie with him,” Rahul Rai told News18.
But he was not going to give up that easily. Desperate to meet his idol once, the fan found a way. He booked himself at the same hotel where Indian Team was put up. But it did not come cheap. The five-star hotel where Team India are staying comes with an exorbitant price tag of Rs 23,400 per night. But unperturbed, Rai managed to get a room.
The next morning, he saw him at the breakfast lounge. While he tried to go near him, security would not let him. When he told the hotel staff that he was hungry and not feeling well, they allowed him at the breakfast bay.

Rai tried to catch Kohli’s attention and it finally worked. Kohli asked him to come out of breakfast area and he had his wish fulfilled. Rai gifted Virat Kohli with a framed collage of his fan page on Instagram. But Kohli refused to carry it back. Instead, he autographed the frame so Rai could keep it as a souvenir. And the moment had finally come. Rai finally got a chance to click a selfie with his idol Virat Kohli.
“I think I was fortunate to get a vacant room. In the morning I could see him in the breakfast bay. I called him many times but the security was a hindrance here too. I did not want to give away this last chance and I told the hotel people that I was hungry and not keeping well. They allowed me to move into the breakfast area. Food was my least interest, I called Kohli many times here too. At one point he noticed me and asked me to meet him outside the breakfast area. I presented a framed collage of the Fan Page on instagram that I created in his name and have one lakh followers. He said he cannot carry it back and autographed it for me to keep as a sweet souvenir of this meeting. We clicked a selfie,” Rahul Rai explained.
