“The challenge here in South Africa is there’s a bit of spongy bounce that the South African pitches have especially here in Centurion. I felt like you have to be a lot more patient. We know what a good fast bowling attack South Africa had always had. Having watched sitting on the sidelines last time I think Virat Kohli had a great series,” KL Rahul said.

“Once you get through the new ball then it’s a country where you really enjoy batting once you get used to the pace and bounce of the wicket. Outfields are quick and challenge for us as openers will be those first 30-35 overs with the new ball. Try to be patient and leave balls outside the off-stump and know which balls to score off. Once we get used to that, we’ll really enjoy batting,” he told Mayank Agarwal.

The duo also spoke about the quality training under head coach Rahul Dravid who guided India to first-ever victory in SA Tests.

“Having Rahul Dravid this time is very helpful. He has played a lot of cricket here, scored a lot of runs and in the 3 or 4 days of training we’ve had, he has had a lot of experiences to share, helping us prepare the best way we can. So, that’s a huge boost for us,” KL Rahul said.

“For me, personally, he’s just been the person who talks about understanding your game, yourself and mind space. If you can work that out and sort that out, more often than not you are giving yourself the best possible chance to succeed. Knowing him, he is a man who thrives and puts the onus on good strong preparation,” added Mayank Agarwal.

KL Rahul also addressed the importance of pacers in the training sessions.

“Bowlers are very competitive even in the nets and they don’t serve you half volleys. Every ball is bowled at match intensity, especially when they come outside of India and they see such a fast bouncy wicket. They get really excited and forget that we’re on the same team which in turn has helped as batsman a lot,” he signed off.

  • KL Rahul is coming on the back of an injury after missing the Test series against New Zealand.
  • The opening batter will look to continue his decent form after shining in the India tour of England.
  • He had slammed 315 runs in 8 innings at an average of 39.38 which included a century (at Lord’s) and a fifty.
  • He needs to improve his forgetful record in South Africa where he managed just 30 runs in 2 Tests @7.5 with includes a high score of 16 runs
  • Mayank Agarwal, on the other hand, got lucky with a place in India playing XI after injury ruled out Rohit Sharma for India Tour of South Africa
  • He will look to continue his exceptional form during his maiden visit to SA after smashing a century and fifty against New Zealand in Mumbai Test.
