IND vs NZ T20: The first game between India and NewZealand on Friday (November 18) got washed out due to rain. India’s express pacer Umran Malik was raring to bowl against the Kiwi batters, but the speedster will now have to wait till Sunday. Meanwhile, he has received an important piece of advice from veteran Zaheer Khan. Zaheer has stated that playing against NewZealand will help Umran hone his skills and gain valuable experience. The former World Cup winner said that Umran is an exciting prospect for India and needs to perform consistently if the right-arm pacer wants to become a regular member of the Indian side. “Umran has been a very exciting talent and this kind of exposure is definitely going to help him, it is about how he takes things forward if he wants to grab the spot consistently,” Zaheer said in an interaction on Prime Video.

Agreeing to Zaheer’s words on Umran, former India head coach Ravi Shastri also said that the NewZealand tour is a learning curve for the speedster. “There is no substitute for genuine pace. Even if you are defending small totals, so this is an opportunity for Umran, hopefully, he will learn from this exposure,” said Shastri.

Malik’s pace ideal for NewZealand conditions

Umran Malik shot to fame after his excellent outing in the IPL 2022 with Sunrisers Hyderabad. With express pace, clocking over 150KPH, he gave selectors a new option. The 22-year-old was included in the Indian squad which faced Ireland in a T20I series. The right-arm pacer made his debut in that series, and he was also included in a T20I game against England.

However, the high economy rate and not managing to cross the 150KPH barrier meant, he was a flop show. Speaking about his numbers in the 20-over format, the right-arm pacer has represented India in only three matches and has taken two wickets. He bowls at an economy of 12.44 with his average being 56.0.

Umran Malik in T20Is:

  • Matches: 3
  • Overs: 9
  • Wickets: 2
  • Economy: 12.44

Despite having poor numbers in his short T20I career, Umran’s pace can be quite helpful for the Indian team going to take on NewZealand on their home soil. The wickets in NewZealand generally assist the pacers with the new ball bowlers getting some swing and bounce from the pitches.
