Cheteshwar Pujara was spotted practising intensely with head coach Rahul Dravid in the early hours on Friday before Day 2 of the IND vs NZ 1st Test. Pujara was found by Tim Southee on Day 1 and was eventually dismissed for just 26, despite the surface offering assistance to the batters.
Cheteshwar Pujara century drought – The innings continued the Indian No.3’s lean patch and he sought the advice of India’s former No.3 and current head coach Rahul Dravid to correct his flaws. Pujara and Dravid were seen discussing intently and the former would hope to imbibe the lessons from The Wall in his game and make up for the chinks in his armour that have been exposed over the last couple of years.

Appointed vice-captain, the onus was on the Saurashtra batsman to make it count especially in the absence of as many as six first-team players. Pujara however failed to do, departing after his typical languid innings soon after lunch to put India in a spot of bother. India’s No.3 batted for almost 15 overs on the pitch but could manage only 26, before poking at a Tim Southee delivery to conjure his dismissal. The edge was safely caught by keeper Tom Blundell reducing India to 106/3 on Day 1.
Cheteshwar Pujara will need to pull up his socks especially with Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer making their mark during the IND vs NZ 1st Test. Iyer, making his debut, became the 16th Indian to score a century on debut and helped the team past the 300-run mark showcasing his potential on the international stage. With Hanuma Vihari currently in South Africa, Pujara is in a race against time to prove his mettle.
