Kyle Jamieson had not played a Test in India before the Day 1 of the Kanpur Test and there remained doubts as to how the Kiwi pacer will perform on tracks not suited for the pacers. Jamieson however quashed all those questions with a fine spell of fast bowling, picking up an excellent three-wicket haul and bowling long spells as teammate Tim Southee battled with what appears to be a groin injury.
Jamieson started off well by scalping Mayank Agarwal early in the day, before accounting for half-centurion Shubman Gill soon after lunch. He followed it up with the wicket of stand-in Indian captain Ajinkya Rahane, who copped one onto his stumps in the second session. Jamieson only bowled a solitary over with the second new ball on Day 1 and will hope to put the relatively new ball to use when play resumes on Friday.
Kyle Jamieson has been really impressive since his debut in Test cricket. He has ridiculous numbers, 48 wickets in just 17 innings at an average of less than 14 and Strike Rate of under 37.

Kyle Jamieson entered the test with 46 wickets in nine matches, and one more wicket during the match will make him the fastest Kiwi to 50 Test wickets. The record is currently held by the legendary Shane Bond, who did so in 12 games. 19 of those have come against India, including seven in the World Test Championship final, where New Zealand won by eight wickets in June earlier this year.
After the end of play, Jamieson said, “Hopefully the new ball will swing a little bit and we’ll try and use that the best we can. If not, it’s just about trying to adjust those plans. Whether the pitch does change a little bit throughout the day, we’ll have to wait and see. It’s certainly just trying to take it as it comes and adjust and adapt as we go. It’s hard to plan ahead because you don’t know what the conditions are going to be like.”
