IND vs NZ: Two places, one spot as the battle of wicketkeepers heats up as Samson and Kishan aim to find a permanent place in the T20 team

  • Samson has played 16 T20Is and has scored 296 runs with a strike rate of 21.14. Although the numbers don’t make for great reading, the RR skipper has done well in limited opportunities in white-ball games in 2022.
  • The right-hand batter has played six T20Is in 2022 and has scores of 39, 18, 77, 30, and 15. The 77 he got was against Ireland.
  • Samson’s 30 not out against West Indies demonstrated his finishing skills under pressure. He is pretty flexible and can bat anywhere from 3 to 7.
  • For the longest time, India has troubled finishing games well in the backend of the innings. Samson can fit into that role effortlessly. His strike of 136 is a big plus too.
  • Meanwhile, Kishan has played 19 matches and has scored 543 runs at a solid average of 30.
  • Kishan has played 14 T20Is in 2022 and has amassed 432 runs. Although he has got more chances than Samson, the southpaw’s strike rate of late 120s was not great.
  • Samson has scored runs at a much better strike rate of 150, and that fact could edge him.

IND vs NZ: Samson impresses in the nets session, likely to be named in playing XI

Samson got an extensive net session on India’s last day of training before the first T20I on November 18. The elegant right-hand batter played some crisp shots and was looking in a good rhythm. The RR skipper also hit two consecutive no-look sixes and sent the support staff into a frenzy. If the practice session is anything to go by, then Samson is likely to be named in the playing XI in the first T20I against New Zealand.
