Ind vs Eng pink-ball Test : From Sachin’s maiden double century to Gavaskar’s 10,000 runs, five records at Motera stadium-India is all geared up to host its second Day/Night Test. The historic pink-ball Test will begin at Motera Stadium (now Sardar Patel Stadium) on February 24. The occasion will be a surreal one as the venue has become the biggest cricket stadium in the world with a seating capacity of 1.1 lakh. It has overtaken Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia, after its renovation.

Over the years, the Motera stadium has witnessed many cricket histories. The upcoming Test in Ahmedabad awaits another record in its tally. India’s ace-spinner R Ashwin is only six wickets behind to become the fourth Indian player to scalp 400 wickets in Tests. As R Ashwin eyes close to his 400th wicket, let’s look at some of the significant achievements by Indian cricketers at the venue:

Sunil Gavaskar

Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar became the first player to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket at Motera Stadium in 1987. He reached the historic feat during his innings of 58 runs against Pakistan.

Kapil Dev

Former India all-rounder Kapil Dev had become the highest wicket-taker in Tests at this historic venue in 1994. He surpassed Richard Hadlee’s 432 wickets record after dismissing Hashan Tillakaratne of Sri Lanka. The World Cup 1983 skipper has second-most wickets for India in Test matches (434 wickets), only behind Anil Kumble (619). He had earlier taken 9/83 against West Indies in 1983.

Sachin Tendulkar

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar smashed his first double century in Tests at Motera Stadium, Ahmedabad (1999) [against New Zealand]. He went on to score six double centuries in his Test career.

Tendulkar also completed his 18,000 runs in One Day Internationals while playing in a World Cup qualifier against Australia in 2011.

Harbhajan Singh

Harbhajan Singh has scored his maiden hundred while playing against New Zealand at this venue in 2010.

Test Debut(s)

VVS Laxman, who helped India win many trophies in Test cricket, made his debut at the iconic Motera Stadium. Other players who made their Test debut at this venue are Lakshmipathi Balaji and Akash Chopra.

Besides Ashwin’s record, James Anderson can also become the third-highest wicket-taker in Tests at Motera Stadium. The England pacer is only nine wickets away to break Anil Kumble’s record (619 wickets). Stuart Broad, too, is only two wickets away from Courtney Walsh’s record (519 wickets).
