It took James Anderson just three deliveries to expose Shubman Gill’s weakness on Sunday as the young Indian opener registered another low score. Gill caressed veteran Anderson for a wonderful cover drive to begin the 2nd innings. However, he poked at a wide delivery once again to depart for just four runs.
The 22-year-old was dismissed in a similar fashion in the first innings as well. Gill had played at one away from his body to hand a simple catch to Zak Crawley at slip. He totalled just 21 runs in Edgbaston, continuing his struggles against the moving ball in English conditions.
The IND vs ENG Edgbaston Test was the perfect opportunity for Gill to stake his claim in the side, in the absence of regular openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. The 22-year-old has seen his career slide since the heroics of Gabba, with KL Rahul ahead of him in the pecking order.

- Gill now faces competition from Mayank Agarwal, Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, Ajinkya Rahane and possibly Sarfaraz Khan and Prithvi Shaw to make the Indian team.

Gill had missed last year’s tour due to injury, which had originally landed Rahul the opportunity. The 29-year-old had taken it with both hands slamming a century at Lord’s and eventually becoming India’s vice-captain. Gill never got going and lost his place to Agarwal for the tour of South Africa.
With Rohit Sharma back and KL Rahul also on the road to recovery, Gill have to wait for his opportunities. The competition only toughens with Cheteshwar Pujara scoring a half-century as a makeshift opener at Edgbaston. Mayank is also waiting in the wings, and Gill’s failure is likely to be detrimental to his chances.
