According to latest health ministry figures,the coronavirus case count in India now stands at 52,952 cases. Over 1,700 people have died due to the virus across the country. The lockdown in India has been extended till May 17.

In order to manage the sudden surge in COVID-19 patients,sports stadiums are being converted to quarantine centres.

Here a Look at the Iconic Stadiums being converted into Covid-19 Centres.

1.Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi

After the no.of cases in the national capital surged,The Sports Authority of India was approached by the Delhi government to turn the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium into a quarantine centre .

2.India Gandhi Athletic Stadium (IGAS) in Assam’s Guwahati

The Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati is also being turned into isolation centre. sporting complex is being retrofitted into a make shift hospital that will be able to take in at least 1,000 patient.

3.Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation (IGMC)stadium in Vijaywada ,Andhra Pradesh

The IGMC stadium has the capacity to seat 25,000 people and is known for hosting the India-West Indies ODI Match in 2002.Now, the stadium is being used to sell vegetables during the lockdownso that social distancing can be enforced.

4.National Sports Complex of India in Mumbai

The National Sports Complex of India at Worli in Mumbai is latest addition to the list. It also has\indoor space which is being used as an observation facility. Anyone who has come in contact with a Coronavirus patient or is suspected of being covid19postive will be asked to stay at the complex.

5. West Bengal’s Dumurjala Stadium

The Dumurjala Stadium is a new construction in Howrah. According to Mamata Banerjee, since it’s not being used for sporting events due to the lockdown,it will be converted into a 150-bed quarantine centre to combat an to increase of Coronavirus patients.

6.Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata, West Bengal

With blood banks dried up during the Coronavirus crisis, the the Kolkata police organised a month-long blood donation campusat the Netaji Indoor Stadium to enforce social distancing.

7.Gachibowli Indoor Stadium in Telangana’s Cyberabad
The Gachibowli Indoor Stadium in Telangana’s Cyberabad has been turned into a quarantine facility. It has separate entrances and exits that as effective isolation.The government is making use of the rooms that were available at the sports complex of the stadium.

The global tally of coronavirus infections currently stands at 3,834,038, and 265,238 people have succumbed to the infection so far. The US continues to be the most affected country, accounting for more than 33 per cent of all reported cases. It has recorded 1,263,224 cases till now. The United Kingdom’s death toll (30,076) has now surpassed even Italy’s (29,684).
