ICC WTC Final: From Wriddhiman Saha, Prasidh Krishna to KL Rahul, latest status on the trio’s fitness ahead of England Tour

ICC WTC Final – Ahead of India’s long tour of England including the ICC WTC Final against New Zealand, BCCI is in a precarious situation regarding three players — Wriddhiman Saha, Prasidh Krishna and KL Rahul. With players needing to join BCCI’s bio-bubble in Mumbai by May 19, Saha and Krishna are still recovering from COVID-19 and are yet to test negative for the virus. On the other hand, KL Rahul is also recovering from appendicitis surgery that ruled him out of the last IPL 2021 match before the tournament was suspended.

While Wriddhiman Saha is the backup wicketkeeper to Rishabh Pant in Test, Prasidh Krishna has been picked up as a standby pacer for the entire England tour. KL Rahul last played a Test match against West Indies in 2019 and since then, he has been only considered for limited-overs cricket. But having him as a backup will only strengthen Team India.

However, the problem is that BCCI has asked the players to assemble in Mumbai by May 19 and appear for two COVID-19 tests before entering the bio-bubble along with their families. The squad will stay in BCCI’s bio-bubble for 10 days before leaving for England on June 2. In England, they will spend further 10 days in quarantine.

“We have been asked to arrive in Mumbai by May 19 and enter the bio-bubble. It’s still tentative and we will get final confirmation soon,” a player who is part of the squad told InsideSport.

ICC WTC Final: What’s latest on Wriddhiman Saha, Prasidh Krishna and KL Rahul?

Wriddhiman Saha: Considered to be India’s first-choice keeper in Test, he lost his place to Rishabh Pant. But he is still a backup wicketkeeper and has been picked for the ICC WTC Final and the England Test series. Saha tested positive in the Sunrisers Hyderabad camp before the IPL 2021 was suspended. After 10 days in quarantine, he returned a negative test but tested positive again in the 2nd test to extend his quarantine period. He has been isolating in Delhi and his fitness is a big question mark.

“My quarantine period is still not over. As a part of the routine check up, 2 tests were done, out of which 1 was negative and the other one came as positive. Otherwise, I am doing much better. Requesting everyone not to spread misleading stories/ information without the whole context,” Saha tweeted on Saturday.

Prasidh Krishna: The young pacer became the first player to test positive after returning home in Bengaluru from the Kolkata Knight Riders camp. He is still recovering and in home isolation. With May 19 being the cut off date, he needs to test negative twice before that date to leave isolation.

KL Rahul: Unlike the other two, KL Rahul isn’t recovering from COVID-19. Rather, he is recovering from appendicitis surgery on May 3. He is currently healing from the surgery and it takes about 10-15 days for complete recovery. Considering he is 12 days into the recovery period, he is expected to join Team India’s bio-bubble on may 19 as instructed by the BCCI. On Saturday, Rahul shared a post on Instagram with his pets with the caption “Healing”.
