Global Sports Week Paris – Olympic shooting champion Abhinav Bindra set to speak at event: India’s first individual Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra is set to speak at the 2021 edition of Global Sports Week (GSW) Paris which is scheduled to be held from February 1 to 5. The former shooter will discuss how India is becoming a new powerhouse in international sports and the work he is doing through the Abhinav Bindra Foundation.

Interestingly, Bindra’s appearance as part of the GSW Paris will be streamed through a central studio at the iconic Eiffel Tower and it will come at the start of a landmark year for international sport which will include the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

It is worth mentioning that Bindra represented India at five Olympics and made history at Beijing 2008 when he clinched gold in the 10-metre air rifle competition.

Global Sports Week Paris: Event to witness elite line-up of speakers

Bindra, who clinched more than 150 medals – including four golds at the Commonwealth Games – in a career that lasted over 20 years, will be joined by a highly prestigious international line-up of speakers which include Arthur Hoeld, managing director for the Europe, Middle East and Africa regions at Adidas and Lindita Xhaferi-Salihu, the sports for climate action lead at United Nations Climate Change.

It is worth mentioning that Hoeld will talk about Adidas’ initiatives promoting and strengthening gender equality in sport, while Xhaferi-Salihu is expected to share her work on engagement in climate action.

Meanwhile, numerous speakers have already been confirmed for GSW Paris and more are expected to be announced every Thursday throughout January.
Among those previously named include International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons, UNESCO assistant director-general for social and human sciences Gabriela Ramos, assistant director-general for social and human sciences at United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux, President of the Movement of the Enterprises of France.

MerConcept founder François Gabart, L’Oreal deputy chief executive Nicolas Hieronimus and General Equality Forum secretary-general Delphine were also announced for the speaker programme.

Global Sports Week Paris: ‘Reinvention in action’ to be key theme of the event

Organisers have embraced the key theme of the event – ‘reinvention in action’ – by introducing a new, multi-country connected format for 2021. It includes a mix of physical and digital events across six future Olympic host cities – Paris, Tokyo, Beijing, Milan, Dakar and Los Angeles.

Global Sports Week programme: India’s strong presence at the event

Alongside Abhinav Bindra, four young talents from India have also been selected among the 34 Young Sports Makers from all over the world who will represent the Generation Z at Global Sports Week. They include Jairath Chugh, young sport management professional, Kimberly Fernandez, founder of a social business, Samrat Ghosh, sport entrepreneur, and Rounak Majumdar, sport management student.

The youngsters will participate directly throughout the programme. They will give their inputs while challenging received ideas through interactions with global leaders. India is the second most represented country in the Young Sports Makers 2021 squad after France.

Global Sports Week: Here’s all you need to know

  • The first GSW Paris was held as an in-person event in the French capital in February last year.
  • The 2021 edition of GSW will witness more than 10,000 sports leaders, athletes and activists are expected to participate across GSW, with the programme set to feature talks, debates, pitch contests, exclusive screenings, sports demonstrations and behind-the-scenes venue tours.
  • More than 50 exhibitors of different types and sizes have booked their place at the new virtual GSWMarketplace.
  • The immersive and fully-online creation will allow firms to showcase their products and services at a time when many traditional conventions cannot take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Total eight projects have been selected from more than 45 applications for the 2021 GSW Social Booster programme and they will have the opportunity to pitch their project to prospective investors and key leaders of sports business and society during GSW Paris.
  • Football Rising, Let’s Play Fair, Pedal Power, SCOTE, Skateistan, Sports3, The Fine that Cleans the Oceans and Women and Kids Empowerment have been named as finalists based on the “proven effectiveness and scalability potential”.
  • After the event, the finalists will take part in a three-month acceleration programme led by 17 Sport and focused on providing strategic and structural support.
  • GSW Paris is set to be staged annually as France prepares to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup and the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics.
