Verstappen had an intense battle last season with Hamilton as Horner said, “Lewis and I have had a couple of conversations over the years. From 2010 to 2013, he was very keen to come and drive for Red Bull.”

Formula 1: Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel won his first F1 title in the year 2010.

“But, we had Sebastian at that time, and to have had two alpha drivers wouldn’t have made sense. Niki Lauda was at Mercedes and was very keen to take Lewis and I remember encouraging him to take him. We were fighting McLaren in 2012,” Horner added.

“They had the fastest car and we felt that Lewis in a McLaren would be more of a threat than in a Mercedes. I encouraged Niki to spend the money as Lewis was wavering a little bit. It would be fair to say that backfired on me,” Horner concluded.

From that point forward, McLaren fell away, though Hamilton proceeded to bring home six additional drivers’ titles. The Brit made his move to Mercedes from McLaren in the year 2013 and went on to break lots of records in the sport.

He had an intense battle with Max Verstappen in the last season as the last race was the decider between both the drivers. It was looking like Hamilton could take away the win easily and add another F1 title to his tally but Verstappen played spoilsport that day.

The Dutch driver overtook the Brit on the last lap at Turn 5 and hence was on fresher tyres which played to the hands of Verstappen. He went on to clinch his first F1 title and put a break to Hamilton’s dominance.
