De Vries, who was formerly a part of the McLaren youth drivers’ program, now sees himself as the test and reserve driver for the Mercedes F1 team. On being asked about the rumours of him joining, the Dutch driver said “These rumours are new to me.”

“I have no idea where you read them or where you came across them. But then I’m very curious where they got that from because honestly, I have no idea,” de Vries further added, explaining how he is not aware of the reported new developments.

The Dutch driver is not a new face to the sport as he has won many trophies and races in his career so far. The 27-year-old has three wins to his name in Formula E and formerly he had won the 2021 all-electric championship too. Meanwhile, he secured his first Formula 2 title in the year 2019 while driving for ART Grand Prix, with the former Haas driver Nikita Mazepin being his teammate.

De Vries finished 10th in this week’s Monaco E-Prix as his team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne took the first position. Meanwhile, F1 journalist Joe Saward has claimed it would be better for Williams to replace Nicholas Latifi with Nyck de Vries, and that the British team might be considering this move.

Saward wrote in his blog, “In this respect, Piastri does not fit in and the team would be better off going with Nyck de Vries, a Mercedes Formula E champion, who is looking for things to do in the future as Mercedes is leaving the all-electric series soon and will sell its team to McLaren.”

The rumours have certainly made the Dutch driver excited, for getting into Formula 1 is his dream. “Of course Formula 1 is a dream. That is a dream for every young driver, but otherwise, I think it is still quite early in the season. We are only at the sixth race in our championship,” he said, albeit subsequently claiming that full focus is right now is with Mercedes in the Formula E.

De Vries right now sees himself eighth in the Drivers’ standings in Formula E as he only won the season opener in Saudi Arabia. In the remaining five races, he has one DNF to his name and his best finish apart from being first came at the Mexico E-Prix, where he finished 6th.
