Despite of recommendations of UK House of Lords to remove gambling sponsorships in UK Sport, another Premier League club has got gambling company as its sponsor.
English Premier League club Crystal Palace has signed up gambling firm W88 as its new main sponsor. The brand will take the front-of-shirt designation at the club, beginning with the 2021-22 season.
It replaces fellow betting company ManBetX in the role, whose contract had run for three years before expiring at the of the 2019-20 season. It was worth around $8.6Mn annually, according to report by SportBusiness.
W88 had previously been the front-of-shirt sponsor at fellow EPL side Aston Villa, also in a deal worth £6.5m across the one-year contract.
The arrival of W88 at Crystal Palace comes despite the spectre of tighter restrictions on gambling sponsorship in UK sport. A House of Lords recently recommended the removal of gambling sponsorship in UK sport. The report came after the government committed to a full-scale review of gambling regulations to tackle problems caused by excessive gambling.
The club also indicate the W88 deal is likely to be the first of several sponsorship contracts announced in the coming weeks, ahead of the 2020-21 campaign kicking off in September.
Its $1Mn-year sleeve sponsorship contract with football app Dongquidi also expired at the end of the 2019-20 season, leaving this designation currently unfilled in the club’s sponsorship portfolio.
