Pierce raised his concerns over the former English playmaker taking over the role in the host country which criminalises same-sex relationships. He further highlighted that it was not a welcoming move from someone who is considered as a global gay icon around the world.

“As you know I don’t watch football, but I would not go to that country as a gay man because I would be very worried,” he said.

“As for David Beckham, he should be hanging his head in shame. He is a gay icon, hugely popular around the world, and he’s doing this for one reason: millions in the bank.”

  • The former England captain’s contract is worth £15 million per-year over the next decade to become the country’s global ambassador.
  • Beckham had visited all the stadium and met the dignitaries, last month in Doha.
  • Beckham has, however, shown his support for the LGBTQ community. He said that rainbow flags will be allowed all across the stadiums.
