The recent World Cups have shown that the Golden Ball award hasn’t gone to the team that emerged champions in the final. If the trend continues on Sunday, be it Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, or Antoine Griezmann, all of them would be more than happy to give up their individual glory in exchange for a World Cup title.

On the other side, all these three world class footballers, would be looking to give their individual best to not just score goals, or carry out marvellous assists but to also break the JINX that continues to haunt the FIFA World Cup stage since 1998.

GOLDEN BALL WORLD CUP JINX

What’s the jinx? – The player from one of the two teams in the FINAL who won the GOLDEN BALL award; his team finished second in the final. The following list comprises of the players who managed to excel in their individual brilliance, but couldn’t go on to win the World Cup glory.

a. 1998 World Cup – Brazilian Ronaldo:

Brazil’s Ronaldo was chosen as the competition’s best player despite Brazil’s 3-0 loss to France in the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Only Just Fontaine and Gerd Muller scored more goals in a single World Cup than he did with eight in seven games.

b. 2002 World Cup – Germany Oliver Kahn: Four years later, Brazilian Ronaldo scored a brace to help Brazil win its record fifth World Cup. The best player of the tournament though went to Germany’s goalkeeper Oliver Kahn who was simply superb in the tournament.

c. 2006 World Cup – France Zinedine Zidane: The World Cup Final in 2006 is remembered for France legend Zinedine Zidane. The latter’s headbutt on Marco Materazzi resulted in his farewell from the World Cup stage but not before he won the best player of the tournament.

d. 2010 World Cup – Uruguay Diego Forlan: Spain and the Netherlands were fighting out for the football’s biggest prize in the final. However, the best player of the tournament went to Uruguay’s Diego Forlan. He scored a total of five goals which were decisive in the South American side finishing at the fourth spot in the World Cup.

e. 2014 World Cup – Argentina Lionel Messi: Unless Lionel Messi changes the results later tonight, the final against Germany in 2014 World Cup remains the saddest day of his career. Germany defeated Argentina 1-0 in the final, and a heartbroken Messi received the Golden ball trophy as the MVP of the tournament.

f. 2018 World Cup – Croatia Luka Modric: Talking about heartbreaks, Croatia’s Luka Modric knows a thing or two about it. Croatia lost 4-2 to France in the final. Even though Mbappe, Pogba, and Griezmann had amazing World Cup performances, Luka Modric was awarded the Golden Ball for 2018.

Few players are given a second chance to win a World Cup trophy. It will be a golden opportunity for both Mbappe and Greizmann to win back-to-back World Cups. This is almost certainly Messi’s final chance to win the global event. All three of these players would forego a fortune to be a part of a World Cup-winning team.
