European Super League – Why was the European Super League scrapped?

  • The Top 12 clubs last season agreed to the formation of a brand-new European Super League.
  • It would have been governed by its ‘Founding Clubs’.
  • It was expected that three more clubs would join excluding German giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund as well as French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
  • The plan was to effectively rival and eventually replace the Champions League.
  • However, the footballing world did not take too kindly for the billion-dollar plan.
  • It forced a meritocratic approach like the Champions League.
  • With UEFA and FIFA announcing that there will be sanctions in case of such a project, most of the clubs pulled out.
  • However, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus continued and a lawsuit was launched in the Swiss court.
