- Former England all-rounder and T20 World Cup-winning captain Paul Collingwood, who served as interim coach on the most recent tour of the West Indies in March.
- Collingwood was also in contention for the role but Mott is now the preferred candidate, with a final decision and announcement expected before the end of the week.
- Gary Kirsten on the flip side will be disappointed as well considering he had proven track record and a CV capable of landing the job.
- Kirsten was the man at helm in 2011 when India won the World Cup while he was later in charge of South Africa as well. Kirsten is currently working with the Gujarat Titans (GT ) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
What challenges lie ahead for Matthew Mott?
- The Biggest challenge for Mott will be defending the ODI World Cup in 2023 in India while T20 World Cup in native Australia will serve as a litmus test for him.
- When the appointment becomes official, Mott’s first task will be against the Netherlands as he England travel for a three-match ODI series in June.
- The first real test for Mott will come in July when India travel to England for three T20Is and three ODIs.
