Arshdeep, who was instrumental in Punjab Kings (PBKS) success in their opening match against Rajasthan Royals’ with a match winning 3 for 35 runs, shared his secret to IPL success. “The secret to success is to keep it simple. Have a clear plan beforehand and bowl to that plan. I bowl in death overs with a clear plan after discussing it with team management and bowl according to that plan. It’s like mixing it up with variation and bowling according to the batsmen’s weakness and not bowling to where they are strong. Simple,” Arshdeep who impressed in the 2nd match against CSK as well with a figure of 1 for 7 runs in 2 overs, told Insidesport.co in an exclusive interview on Saturday.

Former chief selector MSK Prasad heaped praises on Arshdeep, saying the youngster has ability, control and the nerve to bowl at the death overs which was heartening to see. “It’s amazing to see a youngster having such control, nerve and mental ability to bowl at the death overs. It speaks volumes about his confidence level and shows he is up there. Surely, he is a player to watch for,” the former India player observed.

After Arshdeep Singh kept his promise to give his best shot and with his intelligent “death over” bowling, an impressed PBKS team management had decided to use Arshdeep as a regular “death over” specialist and give him maximum chances in IPL 2021. Arshdeep, who had played just 3 matches taking 3 wickets in 2019 and 8 matches with 9 wickets in 2020, is likely to feature in at least 10-12 matches out of a maximum 14 in the league stage.

“He has been truly a find for us. Last season only we knew that he is a ‘lambi race ka ghoda’. Now after last night’s performance, who can drop him? He has proved that he can come up with match winning performances at crucial times. Yes, the team management is very happy with him and we are likely to continue with him as a ‘specialist’ death over bowler. I won’t be surprised if he gets to play 10 to 12 matches in the league stage,” a top source in PBKS had told Insidesport.co  on condition of anonymity.

PBKS batting coach Wasim Jaffer also had a word of praise for the youngster. “This guy (Arshdeep), impresses everyone with his ability to bowl in the death overs. I am sure he is going to continue his good show from last season. I wish him good luck,” Jaffer had told Insidesport.co last week in an exclusive interview.

Earlier, Arshdeep had told Insidesport.co over the phone on April 4th (Sunday) night that he was looking forward to a great IPL season ahead and he had really worked hard for it. “I had reasonably good IPL seasons in the last 2 years. Punjab Kings is a team which gives a lot of opportunity to youngsters. I got to play as many as 8 matches last season and took 9 wickets. This time I have worked even harder so I am not worrying about getting a chance in playing XI. I know my role in the team. I am not thinking too much about bowling faster or targeting anyone in particular. There is only one target that is to do well for the team. I am just focusing on my bowling. I am just waiting & preparing myself for the action on the field. I want to give my 100 per cent on and off the field for Punjab Kings,” he had said.

Starting his career as a “new-ball bowler” and impressing one and all with his pace and control in ICC U-19 World Cup 2018, Punjab Kings Arshdeep Singh has been one of the youngsters to watch out for as a “death-over” bowler in the last two season of IPL, with his execution of yorkers towards the end of the innings drawing praises from the fans and pundits alike.

Arshdeep, who was called up for Kings XI Punjab’s trials in 2019 after his good show in CK Naidu Trophy and Vijay Hazare tournament, proved his credentials as a death bowler which also tempted the franchise to rope him ahead of the IPL 2019 season at a base price of Rs 2,000,000. In his debut match against Rajasthan Royals in his home ground at Mohali, Arshdeep became the talk of the town after scalping the wickets of Jos Buttler and Ajinkya Rahane.

A fully-focussed Arshdeep was not worried at all about camping and playing IPL matches in Mumbai which has once again emerged as Covid hotspot in the second wave of the pandemic in the country. “I have no time worrying about the growing Covid cases in the country and Mumbai in particular as these things are beyond my control. We are in a biosecure bubble so it really doesn’t matter for us how many cases are outside this bubble. The fact remains that if we do not breach the bubble then we are safe. We are all following the necessary guidelines and protocols. The team management is taking care of it so I need not worry,” he had said.
