Put into bat, Jaffna Kings were off to a flying start as Avishka Fernando and R Gurbaz added 48 runs in the powerplay. The duo shifted gears in the middle overs and stitched 122 runs partnership of just 80 deliveries for the opening wicket.
The Giants enjoyed the first success in form of R Gurbaz who departed after scoring 70 off 40 deliveries. However, Avishka Fernando was firm at the other end and slammed 64-ball century and propelled Jaffna Kings’s score over the 200-run mark.
In reply, Dambulla Giants had a shaky start and lost three wickets inside the powerplay. They struggled to maintain the required run rate and kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. At the halfway mark, Giants’ score read 85/5. And, they eventually managed 187/9 in the allotted overs, falling short by 23 runs of the target. Chamika Karunaratne was the lone bright spot for Giants as he remained unbeaten on 75 off 47 deliveries.
For Jaffna Kings, Jayden Seales was the pick of bowlers returning with the figures of 3-24 while M Theekshana and skipper Thisara Perera chipped in with two wickets each.
