CWG 2022 Wrestling LIVE: Indian Wrestlers begin quest for GOLD, Bajrang Punia, Anshu Malik, Sakshi Malik, Deepak Punia in action – Follow Live Updates
Six of India’s top wrestlers will be in action when Wrestling actions begin at the Commonwealth Games on Day 8 in Birmingham. The action will begin with Mohit Grewal in the Men’s Freestyle 125kg, with the Indian expected to make it past the initial rounds and into the semi-finals. Grewal defeated Satendar Malik in the trials and later won his first senior medal and will be aiming to put up a show in his CWG debut.
Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik will be aiming to make it three successive medals at the Commonwealth Games. Bajrang had won the bronze in Tokyo despite an injury and has now returned following a lengthy layoff. He won the Gold in Gold Coast four years earlier and will be aiming to defend his crown starting on Saturday. Malik is yet to win gold at CWG and 2022 might be her best chance to end that drought.
Anshu Malik will be eyeing her first Games medal. She won the Silver medal at the World Championships last year and will hope for a spot on the podium in Birmingham.

In women’s 68kg, Divya Kakran will be in action. The wrestler from Muffarnagar had won the bronze medal at the Commonwealth and the Asian Games in 2018 and will be aiming an improved performance. The veteran has been in the wrestling circuit for a long time and will be one of the favourites in his category.
Deepak Punia came agonisingly close to winning a medal at the Tokyo Olympics but finished fourth. The 23-year-old followed it up with a silver at the World Wrestling Championships and will be keen to make his mark in his debut Commonwealth Games campaign. Punia will face Australia’s Matthew Oxenham and will be favourite to progress into the further rounds.
