The Tokyo 2020 Olympics miss has, in fact, motivated Shiva Thapa even more. Five time Asian Championship medallist Thapa defeated Manish Kaushik 5-0 in the CWG 2022 trials to secure the spot in the 63.5 category last month.
“As a player, there is always something to learn. Now, (after missing Tokyo) I can say that there is a good boxer in me. I have prepared very well for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. I am looking forward to it and will be going for gold,” Thapa said at the sidelines of India’s CWG kit unveiling and send-off ceremony.
Having said that, when it comes to boxing, there will be competition. If one looks at the history of boxing at Commonwealth Games, nations like Australia, England and some African countries have collected an impressive haul of medals.
Shiva is also aware of the threat boxers from these nations bring inside the ring in his 63.5 category, but he is prepared to overcome all odds and beat them.
“The competition is always going to be there. There are boxers from England, Australia and other good contenders in my weight category. I am preparing myself so that I can deliver big against all of them at Birmingham and beat them,” he said.
The boxing team is currently in a camp in Patiala. Before the CWG, they are also head to to Ireland for training.
