First time male finalist

Indian men have contributed to only two medals prior to the BWF World Championships in Huelva, Spain. Both were bronze and came courtesy Prakash Padukone in 1983 and B Sai Praneeth in Basel, 2019. However, for the first time an Indian male shuttler — Kidambi Srikanth will contest the final with a silver already assured. But the target will be to achieve a historic gold.

All Indian semifinal

Male shuttlers from the subcontinent have struggled to make a mark in the competition. However, in Huelva two Indian shuttlers —  Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth made the semifinal and played in an all-Indian affair. Thus confirming a bronze and a silver for India.

Youngest male to medal

Lakshya Sen made history in Huelva by becoming the youngest Indian male shuttler to win a medal at the world championships. The 20-year-old won a bronze medal in his maiden appearance at the world meet, showcasing his renewed hunger to dominate at the big stage. Lakshya Sen became the second youngest Indian shuttler after PV Sindhu to clinch a World Championship medal. The double Olympic medallist was just 18 when she clinched the bronze in 2013.

Four Indians in quarterfinals

For the first time in the history of the competition, four Indian shuttlers made it to the last 8 stage of the BWF World Championships. PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen made history on Friday. However, Sindhu and Prannoy went on to exit the event at the quarterfinal stage.

PV Sindhu extends record

Defending champion PV Sindhu may have bowed out, but in her quarterfinal run, she ensured that she maintained her record of reaching the quarterfinals of every BWF World Championships she has participated in — seven.

The list of records might be eclipsed if Kidambi Srikanth can get the better of Loh Kean Yew in the finals scheduled for Sunday.
