Bindra, Gopi in task force to prepare for next three Olympic games

India’s Sports Ministry has drawn up an action plan to improve India’s performance for the next three Olympics. Champions Abhinav Bindra, Viren Rasquinha and Pullela Gopichand will be part of an eight-member task force.

Administrators and coaches associated with sports are other members of the committee.

Sports Minister Vijay Goel told reporters that “the tenure of the committee will be for three months or till the time it submits its report”.

The task force will suggest an action plan including short-term, medium-term and long-term measures for effective participation of Indian sportspersons in the next three Olympic Games. The task force will identify medal prospects for the 2020 Games. It will also consider ways to identify talent for the 2024 and 2028 Olympic Games.

The recommendations of the task force will be applied to Asian Games and Commonwealth Games too, Goel said.

India had won just two medals at the Rio Olympics. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had then announced the setting up of a task force.
